Derek Jantz, Ph.D.

Chief Scientific Officer, Co-Founder

Derek Jantz is the Chief Scientific Officer of Precision BioSciences. He co-founded the company in 2006 after co-inventing a novel method for modifying the DNA-recognition properties of the I-CreI homing endonuclease. This early work is the foundation of Precision’s ARCUS genome editing platform, which has been used to develop the company’s allogeneic CAR T clinical candidates and preclinical candidates for in vivo gene editing. Trained as a protein engineer, Derek was an early developer of zinc finger technology and spent most of his research career designing proteins for genome editing applications. At Precision, Derek is responsible for all research programs and also supports business and corporate development. He serves on the senior leadership team and is a member of the board of directors. When he is not making critical decisions, Derek enjoys writing holiday themed poetry and finding ways to slip sci-fi references into corporate presentations.
